Dino

My better half likes Italian food, so we've been trying a variety of places. Dino is a small restaurant in Cleveland Park with a wide-ranging menu that should appeal to diners who want to graze on some antipasti and small bites with wine, or those who feel like a three course meal.
I like the burrata cheese better at Cork, but the stuffed squash blossoms are lovely in season. http://www.dino-dc.com/

Polenta ai tre fromaggi con funghi ($8). Polenta with three cheese (asiago, fontal and gorgonzola) and balsamic roasted mushrooms.
Risotto al nero di sieppi ($20). Risotto with cuttlefish ink, squid, tomato and parsley.
Arrosto d'Orata ($24). Whole roasted dorade with lemon, caper and spiced olive oil.

When Vapiano's lines are too long during lunch time...

Sometimes you have to go down the street to another Italian place. http://www.famousluigis.com/
It's a traditional red and white checkered tablecloth Italian-American restaurant on 19th Street NW between M and L Streets. It's not fancy, but the servers are pleasant and the food is abundant for the price.

Insalata Caprese $6.95. Lovely mozzarella cheese, the tomato could have been a tad riper.

Pizza for two with mushrooms and Greek olives $13. (half portion shown )
A pretty decent size for a 2-person pizza.

Linguine alla luciana - squid in a spicy tomato sauce $13.25

Restaurant Week Lunch

I haven't been to Hook in ages. When it opened in 2007, I went a few times. Partially because I appreciated their message of promoting sustainable seafood, and partially because its chef, Barton Seaver, was pretty dreamy. Hook let fish shine, prepared fairly simply, and introduced the idea of crudo (Italian sashimi). The chef also had a thing for champagne and sparkling wine. The decor has bright white walls with oversized photos of the sea in brilliant blues. Other than the hard-sell on starting the meal with a glass of bubbles, I liked it. It just fell off the radar as I started to try other restaurants outside of Georgetown.
It's Restaurant Week again. I used to love RW as a chance to try some of the more expensive restaurants and decide whether it was worthwhile to return and pay full-price. After a few years, I grew less enthralled with the experience as the up-charges started appearing. A last minute decision sent me to lunch at Hook to catch up with a friend. http://hookdc.com/ Maybe absence does make the heart grow fonder after all, because it was a very enjoyable experience.
Grilled calamari with a mushroom cappucino, grilled scallions and crispy poached egg. Loved it. The yolk was still runny on the inside, with a crispy deep-fried coating that added an interesting crunch to the poached egg. The grilled calamari were tender and had a nice lightly charred flavor.Seafood Ceviche with pineapple, red onion, citrus and plaintain chip.
Pacific Cod with spring pea risotto, chili oil and mint. The risotto was creamy and very light and an excellent accompaniment for the cod. The fish was nicely prepared and retained a moist and firm texture. Fish Tacos - blackened tilapia with crispy shallots, guacamole, cabbage, carrots, and chipotle sauce. The limp fries on the side really could and should have been left off the plate.
Just Peachy dessert - cardamon panna cotta, peach preserves and pistachio wafer. Soothing, cool with a hint of sweetness. An excellent finish to the meal.

Vietnamese

Vietnamese food is fresh, fantastic and flavorful. It's especially a great choice when you're heading out to eat with a group of varied dietary preferences and looking for reasonable prices. While Eden Center has a great assortment of Vietnamese establishments, sometimes I'd like to enjoy my Goi Cuon (fresh garden rolls) and Banh Xeo (crispy crepe) in a nicely decorated restaurant with cloth napkins. For those times, I prefer going to Present Restaurant and Four Sisters. Since Present is closer, I've been there more often, and I like the whimsical names of dishes on the menu. http://www.foursistersrestaurant.com/menu.html http://www.presentcuisine.com/

I've also tried the Seaside Asparagus (asparagus and crabmeat soup), the Rich Folks Crepe (Saigon style crepe with pork, shrimp, bean sprouts and green onion), Silken Shawl Imperial Autumn Roll (deep-fried rice thread wrapper filled with marinated minced prawn and minced pork) and the Hard-Working Piglet (carmelized pork ribs cooked in a claypot). The Autumn Roll and the Rich Folks Crepe were very good.
